This book is written with intention to explain as the cardiovascular autonomic nervous system plays an important role in adaptation of the maternal body to nurturing fetus, it is important to understand the sequential changes in cardiovascular autonomic nervous activity at various stages of pregnancy. A well controlled interaction between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic system is necessary for adapting the cardiovascular system to various hemodynamic needs not only under pathophysiological circumstances, such as haemorrhage and shock, but also in physiological states such as pregnancy. The influence of pregnancy on pulmonary function has been reported by many workers. While some investigators found that pregnancy has little effect on overall respiratory function, others felt that such factors as the gradual abdominal distension, the enlarged breasts, and the inherent circulatory changes do indeed affect the respiratory physiology in the pregnant woman.
